Patrick Schmiedt, a former Casper Star-Tribune reporter, contacted every high school in Wyoming in the spring of 2014 in search of each school’s track and field records. The school records represented the start, not the end, of the research. The top school records were compared to other records available online — including marks and times listed on the track website Milesplit, a compilation of marks put together by former Cody head coach Scott Shaffer.
In all, 65 of Wyoming’s 69 high schools with track and field programs responded to the call for records. Officials at five schools — Arvada-Clearmont, Farson, Kaycee, Kemmerer and Tongue River — said their schools do not compile school records. Officials at Laramie, Glendo, Meeteetse and St. Stephens did not fulfill multiple email and phone requests for their school’s track and field records.
Records were limited to outdoor meets only. National meet records contested after an athlete’s graduation were allowed if the athlete was still representing his or her school. As it is Wyoming, wind-aided records were allowed.
This research was initially conducted in concert with the Casper Star-Tribune; a story about these all-time marks ran prior to the 2014 state meet.
